If you've been around Delaware Park in recent months, you might have heard the whispers from regulars eating at the casino and racetrack's Del Cap eatery: 'Did you hear about the brewery?'

One of the major Delaware casinos to achieve approval for legalized sports gambling is one of their most popular in the state, Delaware Park. Already a very popular destination for gamblers due to their slots, table games, and various race wagering, Delaware Park was among the first casinos in all of Delaware to be able to accept sports wagers.

Behind a new wall built only a few feet away, construction workers are busy building out a new 15-barrel brewhouse, which will be named 1937 Brewery Company in a nod to the year Delaware Park first opened.

The project will cost about $1.7 million, says Delaware Park President Bill Fasy.

Delaware Park Casino. You can bet on a number of sports at Delaware Park Casino. Sports betting has technically been offered here since 2009 when wagers on NFL games were permitted in the form of Parlay cards. We expect that online sports betting will be introduced through the Delaware Park online casino. In the state of Delaware, anyone who wishes to place a sports bet either online or in-store must be 21 years of age or older. While sports betting online is legal, no sportsbooks currently offer an online product so it is currently a requirement to bet in one of the three casinos. Delaware Park Casino It’s time to come to the table at the Casino at Delaware Park! Delaware Park offers live table games and full service Tournament and Cash Poker Rooms.

It will be home to Delaware's first craft brewery in a casino, meaning sports betting, along with table games, slots and wagering on horse races to go with the craft beer.

When we heard about the possibility of poker and pints coming together, we called Fasy. He agreed to give us a quick tour of the 4,002-square-foot site and revealed a few details about the project, which has been in the works for several years.

These days, there's not much to see at the site where Fasy hopes 1937 will open in time for the Kentucky Derby this April.

During a visit last week, a couple of workers were building out the barroom as the brewing area sat empty, not yet ready for the tanks that already have been purchased and are still in storage.

This week, they pour the epoxy floor. Two weeks after that, the tanks will come in.

A look at blueprints and renderings show what 1937 will look like: a rustic English gastropub with plenty of dark wood, green and burgundy built in a former high roller pit. It will have an Americanized menu filled with tapas-style offerings, Fasy says.

With sports betting literally only a few steps away, the brewery will be filled with televisions for sports with the hope that fans might rethink their favorite sports bar for a new experience on game day.

Part of the 1937 build, which began in March, will be a $800,000 retrofitting of Delaware Park's 5,272-square-foot kitchen, which dates back to the '60s.

While many of Delaware's craft breweries can be found in unglamorous industrial parks, this one costs nearly $2 million and will be in the center of a colorful casino.

Anthony Russo, author of 'Delaware Beer: The Story of Brewing in the First State' (American Palate, $21.99), thinks it could work, especially given all the site has to offer.

'What appeals to me about it is the thought that blackjack is so much more fun than cornhole,' he says of the game commonly found as an entertainment offering at small breweries. 'I like it for the diversion aspect, for sure.'

A magnet for younger customers?

In the first major new project at Delaware Park since they converted a bistro into Picciotti's Pizza about eight years ago, 1937 is a bid to lure younger customers with disposable income.

Fasy said the idea grew out of seeing the crowds that have been drawn to Delaware Park in recent years for its Fall Beers & Gears car shows and Christmas-themed beer sampling events.

'It would be packed,' Fasy says. 'We sell a lot of beer.'

He watched as 20- and 30-somethings mixed in with his regular crowd, many first-time visitors drawn by the beer. And not just any beer, but the craft brews that have boomed across the state for years now.

With both its casino and racetrack operations generally drawing middle-aged and older patrons, Fasy saw an opportunity to tap into a new customer base.

'The 20-somethings are not coming here except to do sports betting, and we need another attraction to keep them here,' says Fasy, adding that a large number of those younger customers place bets and leave. 'When we sat down strategically and looked at our strengths and weaknesses, the young crowd really was a big item.'

Fasy's building it, but will they come? He wouldn't be dropping nearly a couple million bucks into the project if he didn't think it would work.

He sees the brewery as a way to help the still-growing sports betting business, which tends to have customers that also are more willing to try other gambling offerings like table games or track bets. Generally, casino and racetrack customers stick to what they like with little cross-pollination, Fasy says.

And after losing about 60% of revenue due to COVID-19 this year, Fasy hopes a new brewery will help create some buzz when it opens, drawing some new post-college faces.

Russo thinks the casino's location, located only a few miles from Newark and the University of Delaware, makes a craft brewery a promising fit.

'I've been there for brewery events. That's a town that likes craft beer,' he says. 'Iron Hill Brewery was founded there [in 1996] and was able to be successful when there really was no such thing as craft beer.'

Lookin' for a leader

What type of beers will 1937 focus on? Will they be adventurous? Will their names play off the casino and racetrack setting?

You'll have to ask 1937's head brewmaster. Except there's one problem: There isn't one yet.

Fasy is on the hunt for the right person to lead the brewery, which has been a difficult effort so far.

'It'll be a great opportunity for someone to get involved in a multi-faceted beverage operation,' he says. 'We really think this brewery is going to be an attraction.'
